New Delhi – Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi emphasized the importance of national security being a comprehensive capability to both wage and deter war, during his speech at the fourth General Bipin Rawat Memorial Lecture in New Delhi on Sunday.
Speaking at the event, General Dwivedi outlined the growing significance of emerging technologies in enhancing national security. He stated, “Technological prowess has become the new currency of deterrence and data has become the new capital of trade and security.” This remark highlighted the evolving nature of global security dynamics, where technology plays a crucial role in strengthening defense mechanisms and shaping strategies.
The Army Chief elaborated on the multidimensional approach required for robust national security. “Security is about wholesome capability to wage war and deter war,” he said. He stressed the importance of several factors, including a healthy military-civil fusion, a self-reliant defense industrial base, and the utilization of dual-use assets at the national level. General Dwivedi also underscored the need for well-informed, empowered decision-makers and an inclusive approach involving citizen warriors.
Highlighting global geopolitical realities, General Dwivedi noted, “Anti-colonial allies champion multi-world order and that bandwagoning of nations helps prevent conflict.” He further reinforced India’s commitment to peacekeeping, advocating for nuclear weapons to remain a political deterrent asset, as long as possible.
Reflecting on India’s role in global security, General Dwivedi spoke on the country’s leadership in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). He pointed out India’s firsthand experience dealing with terrorism, citing the ongoing challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, the Northeast, and the fight against left-wing extremism. “I would like to assure you that the Indian Army remains aligned and integrated with the nation,” he added, reinforcing the Indian Army’s dedication to the country’s security and stability.
The event also honored the memory and legacy of General Bipin Rawat, India’s first Chief of Defence Staff, who passed away in a tragic accident in December 2021. General Anil Chauhan, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), and all ranks of the Indian Armed Forces paid tribute to General Rawat, remembering him as a visionary leader, a fearless soldier, and a strategic thinker who dedicated his life to fortifying India’s defense capabilities.
General Dwivedi praised General Rawat’s leadership, saying, “A man of unwavering resolve, foresight, and exemplary leadership, General Bipin Rawat’s indomitable spirit and commitment to the nation will continue to inspire generations of warriors.” He concluded by stating that General Rawat’s legacy remains alive in the hearts of every soldier and citizen.
The event served not only as a commemoration of General Rawat’s extraordinary contributions but also as a reaffirmation of India’s resolve to strengthen its defense systems and ensure the security of its people in the face of evolving global threats.
