Jammu : In a significant operation, the Indian Army has seized a large cache of arms and ammunition in the Jhullas area of Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir, late Saturday evening. The operation was conducted by the Army’s Romeo Force based on specific intelligence inputs.
Officials reported that the search operation led to the discovery of a suspected terrorist’s bag, which contained an array of dangerous weapons and explosives. The haul included an AK-47 assault rifle, pistol rounds of Pakistani origin, and sophisticated explosives such as radio-controlled improvised explosive devices (RCIEDs), timed destruction IEDs, stove IEDs, and Chinese grenades.
In recent months, the region has witnessed a rise in hit-and-run attacks carried out by terrorists, believed to be foreign mercenaries, targeting the Army, local police, and civilians in the hilly districts of Doda, Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi. Following these assaults, which often involved ambushes, the terrorists have been able to retreat into the thick forests and challenging terrains of the area.
To counter this persistent threat, the Army has deployed over 4,000 soldiers from elite Para Commandos and personnel trained in mountain warfare to strategically important highland areas. This renewed approach has significantly curtailed terrorist activities, with a marked decrease in attacks reported across these districts.
The increased presence of security forces has led to direct engagements with terrorists, resulting in the neutralization of eight militants thus far. This proactive strategy aims not only to dismantle terrorist networks but also to protect local communities from the threats posed by these militants.
In addition to military efforts, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have taken measures to bolster village defenses. They have issued automatic weapons and provided basic weapon handling training to Village Defence Committees (VDCs) in the hilly districts, enhancing local preparedness against potential terrorist incursions.
As the situation continues to evolve, the collaboration between security forces and local communities is seen as vital in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
