PM Modi meets Antony Blinken on sidelines of ASEAN Summit

New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday during the ASEAN-India Summit in Laos. This pivotal meeting underscored the robust diplomatic ties between India and the United States, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing regional challenges.

During the discussion, PM Modi expressed his condolences for the loss of lives due to Hurricane Milton, emphasizing India’s solidarity with the United States in the face of natural disasters. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating on global and regional issues, showcasing the ongoing partnership between the two nations.

Prior to his meeting with Blinken, PM Modi held bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. He congratulated Ishiba on his recent appointment, expressing confidence in Japan’s leadership and India’s commitment to its strategic partnership with the nation.

In his inaugural meeting with PM Luxon, Modi welcomed New Zealand’s decision to join the International Solar Alliance and extended an invitation for Luxon to visit India, which he readily accepted.

Speaking at the summit, PM Modi declared the 21st century as the “Asian century” for India and ASEAN countries. He highlighted the importance of friendship and cooperation among these nations, especially amid global conflicts and tensions.

In a significant announcement, the Prime Minister unveiled a 10-point plan aimed at enhancing connectivity and resilience within the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Partnership. This plan, celebrating ten years of the ‘Act East’ policy and based on Laos’ theme as the 2024 ASEAN Chair, includes initiatives to bolster physical, digital, cultural, and spiritual connectivity, as well as enhancing resilience in health, climate, and supply chains.

As the summit progresses, the discussions are set to pave the way for deeper ties and collaborative efforts among ASEAN countries and India, reinforcing their collective commitment to a prosperous and stable region.
