India-Russia ties so strong that PM Modi would understand me without translation: Putin

Kazan –  In a significant display of camaraderie, Russian President Vladimir Putin underscored the deep-rooted partnership between India and Russia during his bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan. Putin’s remarks, emphasizing the strong bond between the two nations, elicited laughter when he noted that Modi would understand him “without any translation.”

The lighthearted comment came as both leaders convened at the Governor’s Palace, reflecting the warm personal rapport that has developed between them. Putin reminisced about Modi’s visit to Moscow in July, where they held “fruitful negotiations” and expressed gratitude for Modi’s presence in Kazan for the summit.

In his address, Putin highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the two nations, stating, “In Kazan, we must make a number of important decisions aimed at further improving the activities of the association and strengthening multifaceted cooperation within its framework.” He emphasized that the relationship, characterized by a “Special Privileged Strategic Partnership,” is evolving positively.

Putin pointed to various aspects of their cooperation, including the strengthening interaction between legislative bodies, ongoing communication between foreign ministers, and a robust trade turnover. He announced that the next meeting of the intergovernmental commission is scheduled for November 12 in New Delhi, indicating a commitment to further enhance economic ties.

Acknowledging the current geopolitical climate, Putin recognized India’s consistent relationship with Russia amidst ongoing regional conflicts. He welcomed India’s decision to open a Consulate General in Kazan, viewing this expansion of diplomatic presence as a vital step toward deepening bilateral relations.

The meeting also followed a notable moment in July when Putin honored Modi with the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, Russia’s highest civilian award, during the Indian Prime Minister’s first visit to Russia since 2019.

On Monday, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated the strong historical ties between India and Russia, stating, “If you look at our history with Russia after Independence, Russia has never done anything to impact our interests negatively.” His remarks at the NDTV World Summit underscored the unique standing of Russia among India’s major global partners.

As both leaders continue to strengthen the India-Russia partnership, their collaborative efforts at the BRICS Summit are poised to pave the way for enhanced cooperation in various sectors, fostering stability and development in the region.
