Cabinet Approves New Pathway for Agniveers to Join Regular Armed Forces

New Delhi : In a landmark decision aimed at strengthening the future of the Agnipath recruitment scheme, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General NS Raja Subramani announced that the Union Cabinet has approved a revised framework that will provide all Agniveers with an opportunity to join the regular Armed Forces.

Describing the decision as a “very significant day” for the Indian Defence Forces and the Agniveers, General Subramani said the move reflects the government’s confidence in the performance and dedication of the young recruits who joined under the Agnipath scheme.

The Agnipath scheme, introduced on June 14, 2022, was launched with the objective of recruiting young personnel into the Army, Navy, and Air Force for a four-year tenure. At the time of its introduction, the government had stated that the scheme would undergo periodic reviews based on the performance of the recruits.

With the first batch of Agniveers now approaching the completion of their four-year service, defence authorities have conducted comprehensive performance evaluations. According to General Subramani, the feedback received from all three services has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the professionalism, discipline, and operational effectiveness demonstrated by the Agniveers during their tenure.

Under the original framework, only 25 percent of Agniveers were eligible for permanent enrolment into the regular Armed Forces based on merit, while the remaining 75 percent were expected to return to civilian life with valuable skills and discipline gained through military service.

However, the revised policy introduces a major change. The remaining 75 percent of Agniveers will now be offered an additional engagement period of two years. After successfully completing this extended tenure, those willing to continue their military careers will be considered for enrolment into the regular Armed Forces, subject to objective selection criteria.

The CDS said the updated framework represents a significant evolution of the Agnipath scheme and provides greater career certainty for Agniveers while ensuring that the Armed Forces continue to induct capable, experienced, and well-trained personnel.

The announcement marks one of the most important policy updates to the Agnipath scheme since its launch and is expected to benefit thousands of young soldiers serving under the programme across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
