India Calls for Greater Role of Troop-Contributing Nations in UN Peacekeeping

India has called for stronger political backing and greater participation of troop-contributing countries in shaping United Nations peacekeeping missions. Speaking at the UN, India’s Military Adviser, Colonel Tarunendra Pratap Singh, emphasized that successful peacekeeping operations require more than military deployments—they must be supported by a comprehensive political process.

Addressing the international forum, Colonel Singh said that peacekeeping missions are far more likely to achieve lasting success when they are backed by a broader political framework. He noted that military efforts alone cannot resolve complex conflicts unless they are complemented by sustained diplomatic and political engagement.

Highlighting the role of countries that contribute troops to UN peacekeeping operations, Colonel Singh stressed that these nations should have a structured and meaningful voice in drafting the mandates of the missions they support. He said that greater involvement of troop-contributing countries in decision-making would help ensure that peacekeeping mandates are realistic, effective, and aligned with conditions on the ground.

India has long been one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping operations, with thousands of its personnel serving in missions across the world over the decades. New Delhi has consistently advocated for reforms that provide troop-contributing nations with a greater role in planning and decision-making, arguing that their operational experience is crucial to the success and safety of peacekeeping missions.

Colonel Singh’s remarks reaffirm India’s commitment to strengthening the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping while ensuring that the countries making significant personnel contributions are adequately represented in shaping the objectives and mandates of these global missions.
